There is something about my indoor plants

“May they rest in the compost.” is what my eldest son said about my indoor plants that died last year. Ouch, that hurts.

I remembered telling one mum about my dead plants. Reminiscing the horror on her face with her matching ” Why?!How?!” query, she concluded and advised me that I killed the plants with kindness. In other words, I gave them too much water.

However, there is something about the plants this year 2021 that got me interested in them again. Now, little by little, I am getting enthusiastic about beautifying the home with greenery! To all the expert gardeners out there who are lovers of plants galore, here I am, a newbie!

Therefore, I am not allowing another plant to bite the dust again! Pardon the drama.

Something woke up in me to start taking care of plants once again. It all began when I was in a house of a friend who has one of the best backyard gardens I have ever seen. She has so many vegetables and fruits, the epitome of organic produce, in my opinion.

She gave me a money plant a.k.a. a jade plant so I can be a millionaire. Well, she got me so thrilled with the word millionaire that I enthusiastically accepted the jade plant!

Jade plant of Shirin: As a newbie, I need to buy next time those white pebbles to beautify even more the plants.

My hubby helped me carry the free plants and plant them. He has a green thumb.

My family and I went to Bunnings Warehouse to buy white plant pots and premium potty mix. I didn’t even imagine myself way back that I, Shirin, will buy indoor plants. I changed! The previous ones were gifts.

I told my sons to choose an indoor plant at Bunnings Warehouse that they like and feel they want to take care of. On the other hand, hubby didn’t buy anymore because he has a cute Aloe Vera plant with a green pot of his choice on his office desk.

My eldest son chose with a smile a Peace Lily.

My middle son preferred a Lucky Bamboo. He remembered Kung Fu Panda.

My youngest son got excited with his Spider Plant. He told me it looks like bushy hair!

Also, I bought another Lucky Bamboo for myself because they are so adorable. Every time I look at them, I imagine the lucky bamboos saying, “Hello! What are you reading?”

I told the boys to embrace the experience of taking care of an indoor plant with me and see what happens.

Here is what I have learned so far in our journey.

The plants bring positive vibes to the room.

Indoor plants bring good vibes to the room because there is tiny greenery in the midst of all the man-made surroundings. They bring life which is a positive energy to the place.

I remembered the dead plants of long ago. Sad to say, they made the room sad. I was holding on to them hoping that they may live. Yet, they said goodbye to the neglect they didn’t deserve. *sniff *sniff

Consequently, I started asking individuals who have green thumbs. Firstly, they told me to water them weekly or fortnightly. Secondly, move them around and let them have access to indirect sunlight. Thirdly, repot if you must. Based on what I read, it is essential to change the potty mix every six months.

  • The plants filter the air in the room.

According to Reader’s Digest, spider plants remove impurities from the air like formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. You get formaldehyde mostly from automobile exhaust and tobacco smoke.

Thanks spider plant for the fresh air!

  • The plants can have feng shui information about them.

I learned that the number of lucky bamboos has meaning. According to the website thespruce.com, the one I have has two bamboo stalks that symbolize LOVE

Moreover, three stalks mean happiness, wealth and long life and so on. On the other hand, it is rude to give lucky bamboo with 4 stalks because it relates to death. It is up to you if you believe this or not. I am just informing you that there is extensive information about plants and feng shui.

  • The plants are now a part of your expenses.

The indoor plant needs tender loving care. As a result, they are part of the budget. They are thriving and I make sure that they are loved with the right size of plant pots, sufficient water, good sunlight and potting mix. I learned from my mistakes.

The plants can remind you that little things can bring you joy.

The tiny greenery brings gladness to my life. Now, I understand why a lot of people love to take care of their plants, flowers and garden. It is therapy. It brings satisfaction to them.

Moreover, I sometimes tell my plant ” Wow, you have brand new leaves you good looking thing!” I send appreciation to my dear plant.
